Alfie & Finn

Alfie was a little boy who knew all about whales. He did a project about them at school. He knew all the different types, what they ate and where they lived. He knew they breathed out air through a blowhole on the top of their head and that some whales grew to the size of 3 double-decker buses!
Alfie wished he could see a real whale. He had seen pictures in books and watched programmes on TV. But he lived in the middle of a big city, where there was a cinema; a museum; a park with slides and swings; and a swimming pool, but no sea.
Finn was a large whale who lived in the sea. He knew all about humans. He did a project about them at school. He knew there were lots of different shapes and sizes of humans. He knew what they ate and where they lived. He knew they breathed in air through their noses and mouths. He knew they were very small, smaller than dolphins!
Finn wished he could see a real human. But he lived in the deep waters of the oceans, where there were lots of fish to see, but no humans. Humans couldn’t hold their breath for long enough to live underwater; they had arms and legs for living on land.
In summer, Finn and his parents swam round the world to visit his Aunty and Uncle, who lived in the sea off the coast of Cornwall. It was a long trip and Finn was sad about leaving home and his friends over the summer. He particularly missed playing with Greenback the turtle. They were best friends and would swim off to explore underwater caves and often come home late for tea.
Would you believe it! During his summer holidays, Alfie and his parents were staying with his Aunty and Uncle who lived by the sea in Cornwall. It was a long car drive and Alfie was sad that he would not see his best friend, George, over the summer. They would go off exploring on their bikes and often come back covered in mud and late for tea.
One morning, Alfie took his bucket and spade down to the beach. He spent some time looking for crabs in the rock pools but didn’t find any. So, he climbed further onto the rocks by the sea, he wanted to watch the waves crashing and hear the roaring sound they made. As he got closer, he heard a splashing sound below and peered over the top. It was Finn swimming around looking for underwater caves to explore.
When they saw each other, they both nearly jumped out their skins! Alfie fell over backwards, dropping his bucket and spade. Finn dived down under the water startled by the strange creature on the rocks.
Slowly, they came back for a closer look. Alfie peered over the edge to find Finn the whale lifting his nose right out the water. They stared at each other, face to face. Alfie had never seen a real life whale before! Finn had never seen a real life human before!
Finn dived below the water and stuck out his tail, slapping it on the waves. He disappeared for a few moments then burst through the water. His whole body rose up for Alfie to see and then crashed down onto the waves. The splash soaked Alfie to his skin but he didn’t care. He waved his arms and shouted ‘hello\\\', as jumped up and down with joy!
Suddenly, Alfie heard a low moaning sound further out to sea, it sounded like something was calling the whale. Finn poked his head above the water as if he was saying goodbye, Alfie knew the whale had to go.
At the same time, Finn heard a sound calling over the rocks, it made the boy turn his head and he knew he had to go.
Alfie smiled and waved goodbye. ‘Come back tomorrow’ he shouted as he watched the whale swim out to sea. He picked up his bucket and spade, and clambered back over the rocks. His mum was calling and waving to him from the beach. Alfie thought to himself “this was going to be the best summer holiday ever!”
